Vet in Mexico Gets Backing
As Marine veteran Andrew Tahmooressi was ordered back to jail after appearing in a Mexican courthouse in Tijuana on July 9, a host of lawmakers and a movie star voiced their support for him. Thousands have come to Tahmooressi’s support, with more than 100,000 people signing a White House petition asking the president to intervene on the veteran’s behalf.
The Marine veteran said he missed his exit near the border crossing in
March, entering Mexico with three firearms and dozens of rounds of ammunition
in his truck before being arrested by local authorities. Now a bipartisan group of 74 lawmakers, led
by Reps. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and Lee Terry, R-Neb., sent letters to the
Mexican judge, asking that Tahmooressi’s character and service are taken into
account. Actor Gary Sinise, best known
for playing Lieutenant Dan in the 1994 classic “Forrest Gump,” also tweeted his
support for Tahmooressi.
