2024 October VCSU Meeting
The next meeting for the Veterans Coalition of Southern Utah is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Southern Utah Veterans Home. The Veterans Home is always such a great host!
If you have items you would like for me to add to the agenda, please get them to me no later than Monday, Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. If you know you have an item or items you would like to discuss, let me know and I will place it on the agenda. That way we can make time for it.
I look forward to seeing everybody there!

2024 Patriot Day
In its 5th year, the City of St. George's Patriot Day: Remembering 9/11 commemoration will be poignant and reflective. We invite everyone to join us on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Historic Town Square for this great event.
Our guest speaker, Bob Flowers, was the state's public safety commissioner at the time of 9/11, and was in charge of security for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. We're excited to hear his perspective. There will be a special Bell Tribute by the St. George Fire Department, children's choirs performing patriotic numbers and, like last year, the bagpipe procession to the Field of Heroes.
Other aspects to Patriot Day include:
* Sept. 9 through 11 the Field of Heroes will be on display on the lawn at Historic Town Square. The flags memorialize the first responders who died in the line of duty on 9/11/2001.
* Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Historic Town Square — immediately following the patriotic program — there will be a flag retirement ceremony on the steps of Town Square.
* Many first responder vehicles on display out on Main Street.

American Legion Lobster Dinner

Two great events happening this weekend at the Western Sky Aviation Warbirds Museum, located at St. George Regional Airport.
The Armed Forces Day Celebration is May 17 and 18.
The 1940s Hangar Dance is May 18 at 6 p.m.

Arm Yourself: Claim Predators Want to Prey on Your Benefits
Many Veterans seek support and help with filing VA benefits claims for the payments they deserve. Be cautious of "claim predators" - unaccredited companies or individuals targeting Veterans' benefits for profit.
How to identify claim predators:
• Charging High Fees: Predatory companies charge absurd fees or require you to pay a portion of your VA benefits. Never pay anyone a fee to file an initial claim for benefits.
• Making Dishonest Promises: Don't trust anyone who claims they can help accelerate the claims process and obtain a 100% disability benefits evaluation. Remember, only VA has the authority to determine disability ratings.
• Requiring Binding Contracts: No one should ever charge a fee to file an initial claim for VA benefits. Never sign a contract agreeing to pay an unauthorized individual/company a percentage of your benefit payment in exchange for help with your VA claim.

2024 Military Appreciation Night
The Washington County Fair will host its annual Military Appreciation Night April 16 at 6 p.m. at the Outdoor Arena of the Fairgrounds (5500 W 700 S Hurricane). This year’s event honors “Modern Warriors” — those who served post Vietnam. All are invited to attend.
“As a country, we owe it to these selfless men and women to support and honor them, recognizing the bravery and dedication that comes with choosing to serve in the armed forces,” said Fair Director Susi Lafaele. “Each year we set aside a spot in the Washington County Fair to acknowledge and recognize their service and sacrifice. We invite all military veterans who have served since 1975 to attend, including active-duty military members as well as their family members and citizens who want to show their appreciation.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Fair has hosted such an event, beginning in 2020 with our remaining World War II veterans.
Lt. Col. Coy Bryant, who retired in 2016 following more than 27 years of active duty will be the keynote speaker. Bryant served all over the globe during his career, including as Chief Executive Officer for the Homeland Response Force, and was Chief of Staff for 566 personnel in support of NATO Kosovo Forces.
Sponsored in part by the Daughters of the American Revolution Color Country Chapter, other participants in the event include: Washington County Commissioner Victor Iverson, who will read a proclamation; Ed Tracey President and CEO of the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce, who will be the master of ceremonies and perform a musical number; David Cordero, Chairman of the Veterans Coalition of Southern Utah, who will deliver a speech highlighting the military’s all-volunteer force.
Inside the Grafton building, there will be a display honoring those who have served in our military. All veterans planning to attend are urged to sign up here, so they can receive a proclamation.

Hi everyone, The next monthly meeting for the Veterans Coalition of Southern Utah (VCSU) is set for Tuesday, March 19 at 1 p.m. at the Southern Utah Veterans Home. As always, this is an open meeting and everyone is invited. If you have something you would like to include on the agenda for discussion, please get that to me by 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Having items on the agenda helps us stay on track and get finished within the hour that we are scheduled for. Jan 16, 2024 VCSU Meeting
Our monthly meeting is set for Tuesday, January 16 at 1 p.m. at the Southern Utah Veterans Home. These meetings are typically scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month, although we usually take July and December off.
As always, this is an open meeting and everyone is invited.
If you have something you would like to include on the agenda for discussion, please let me know ASAP. Having items on the agenda helps us stay on track and get finished within the hour that we are scheduled for.
