2020 Wreaths Across America

2020 WREATHS ACROSS AMERICAN FLYER

Hello All -

Attached is our "modified" event flyer for Wreaths Across America Day being held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 starting at 10 am at Tonaquint Cemetery.  Please note that the amazing ceremony we normally provide before wreath laying commences has been CANCELLED.  We will still meet though at 10 am for some brief instructions BEFORE laying remembrance wreaths on the graves of veterans buried at this location. When we are done, the St George Police Department will once again guide us to historic St George Cemetery to finish wreath laying at that location.  In all, we will be placing just over 2000 remembrance wreaths on veteran graves at these two locations.

If you can give me an idea about how many volunteers will be coming out from your group, that would be great.  As of this date, I am not limited on the number of volunteers who may gather in one place, but we all know that drastic changes are not unheard of during these unprecedented times.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

2020 Nov 17 VCSU Meeting

Did today's meeting sneak up on you too? We will meet by Zoom, per usual, at 2 p.m. today. If you see this before the meeting, let me know if you would like something on the agenda. Please be thinking on events/initiatives from now through to February, as we will not meet in December.
Thanks,
David

Covid Cancellations

Just a quick note to our group to report that just about every Veterans Day event has been cancelled, including:
•    SunRiver event
•    Veterans Day Parade
•    DSU's events (although they will raise the flag Wednesday and Marine veterans on campus can enjoy birthday cake)
It's sad, but I get it. Let's all be safe out there.

Benefits Fair at the Vet Center, originally scheduled for Nov. 17, has been canceled until further notice.

And to all veterans on this thread, please know from the bottom of my heart that I appreciate your service!

Thanks,
David

2020 Aug 18 VCSU Meeting

Following a one-month hiatus, the Veterans Coalition of Southern Utah is back! Our next meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. We will meet via Zoom again, in consideration of those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19.

Also, for those who missed it, the Washington County Fair hosted a program to honor the surviving veterans of World War II. It may come as a surprise to you that there are still approximately 100 WWII veterans living in Washington County. Most are in their mid-90s or older — one veteran who showed up last Thursday was 103! It was great to at least figuratively wrap our arms around them and thank them for their efforts 75 years ago.

The program was recorded. You can watch it here

Welcome Home, Bryan "Cooper" Mount

 Photo from St. George News

Welcome home Bryan "Cooper" Mount: Thursday, 4 p.m.(ish).

Twenty-five year old Cooper Mount, an 82nd airborne paratrooper who was born in St. George, was killed in Syria in July. His body will be transported to St. George on Thursday. The general public is invited and urged to line Main Street, from 100 South north to STG Blvd, and then from the Blvd to Metcalf Mortuary on 288 W. St. George Blvd, and have American flags or patriotic messages on handheld signs. This is a time of mourning and respect, and it is also a time to remember his service and sacrifice. If you wish to attend, please be in position by approximately 3:45 p.m.

Aug 2020 VCSU Meeting

Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m.
This will be a Zoom call, per recent usual. I will get with Court Pendleton to get a link out to everybody.

Salute to WWII Veterans

Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Harmony Building inside the Washington County Fairgrounds. This event is to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. This may be the last gathering of a significant number (12 to 20) of WWII veterans in our area. This is a private ceremony due to limited space and COVID-19 precautions; however our respective VSOs and members of our coalition are invited. David Cordero will be among a few speakers that include a WWII paratrooper from the Pacific Theater.

It's No Fair!!!

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the American Legion will not be participating in the Washington County Fair this year.

2020 Virtual Hiring Fair

COMPANIES HIRING

PARTICIPATING EMPLOYERS

HOH and MOAA are hosting a virtual career fair for Veterans and Mil-Spouses on May 8th with 25 companies participating (attached).  There is no limit to job seeker attendance.  While not required, it is recommended that job seekers register in advance in order to upload their resume and maximize their preparation for the fair.

If this event is successful, additional virtual hiring fairs will likely be added to the calendar!  Therefore, please forward this email liberally to optimize participation and success.  The tentative plan is to return to in-person events late summer/early fall; however, with social distancing these events will likely look much different.

HOH has also compiled a list of 450+ companies that are actively hiring…feel free to share this list as well.  I hope everyone is taking good care of themselves and their families.  Have an excellent day!

VCSU Meeting for April 2020 Cancelled

Our Veterans Coalition of Southern Utah will not meet this month (April) to help limit the potential spread of the coronavirus.

We will try it again in May, with a date of May 19 at the American Legion Hall. I sure hope we can turn the corner on COVID-19 so that we might be able to observe Memorial Day with the reverence and attention it deserves.

17 Mar 2020 - NO VCSU Meeting

Hi everyone: Our Veterans Coalition of Southern Utah will not meet this month to help limit the potential spread of the coronavirus.

We will plan to meet again Tuesday, April 21, at the American Legion Hall.

I look forward to seeing you all then, and I hope that Rep. Lowry Snow will be able to attend to be the speaker.

Note:  Sadly, the Coronavirus known as COVID-19 is dominating the news and public health concerns continue to rise at a very rapid pace. In light of this, please be advised that DAR Color Country Chapter's upcoming 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemorative Ceremony scheduled to occur on March 27th at the Southern Utah Veterans Home has been officially POSTPONED as of this writing and will be rescheduled to a another date later in the year. It was mutually agreed upon by the leadership teams of both DAR Color Country Chapter and Southern Utah Veterans Home that it would be in the best interest of ALL to discourage large event gatherings at this time to help minimize the threat of exposure to others, and especially to the SUVH residents who would be in the "at risk age group" based on current studies.

A press release about the event postponement is currently being written and will be sent out to our local news outlets for public broadcasting within the next day or two.  In the meantime, please help us by passing this message forward through your own "inner circles" as we make every attempt to quickly reach out and advise as many people as we possibly can without incident.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have as we work together to get the message out.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Date: Fri, Jan 24, 2020 at 2:40 PM

Subject: AFJROTC Ball

We want to invite you to attend our annual Military Ball.  This year it will be on 29 Feb at the Sun River Community Center with all the regalia and military traditions of a formal ball (Mr. and Madam Vice, the Grog, etc.).  The cadets always have a great time and enjoy Veteran’s/Spouses company.  We will have a photographer to take pictures at no cost (digital proofs will be made available).  Menu will be Chicken Cordon Bleu, Tri-Tip Steak or Vegetarian.  Please see the attached announcement and feel free to email to me with any questions at Kenneth.field@washk12.org.  Please RSVP to me by 15 Feb with your meal choice (the earlier the better).  We are only charging the actual cost of the meal and all  need to be pre-ordered so an RSVP is required.
Payment can be made through myschoolfees.com.  You will need to sign in as a guest then choose Dixie High School from the drop down menu (UT – Washington – Dixie High School).   Then select “JROTC” under category and add the number of adult meals to you cart that you want to purchase.  If you want to sponsor a cadet you may also do that and pay for their meal at the same time (we are subsidizing their ticket so $25 each).
If you have a myschoolfees.com account ensure you select “show public items” at the bottom prior to selecting the category of JROTC.
You can also pay with cash or Visa/Master Card at the school.

Thanks so much and we look forward to a wonderful evening.
